Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price.  And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

As a fan of Amanda, I knew if anyone could get me interested in sirens/mermaids, she'd be the one who could. Now, after finishing this book I wasn't screaming "OMG NEED MORE". It's safe to say I'm very interested in the world of sirens.

Having JUST looked up the mythology behind sirens (I swear I just looked it up! Even look at my history. Okay, so you can't see it. Oh just believe me), I knew it wasn't a simple straightforward myth. After having read through it, I think Amanda does an awesome job of explaining it in the book. Warning you, It can be hard to follow, but don't worry. Just reread parts so can grasp it. I know I did.

Now onto Gemma, 16 and Harper, 17. Nine years ago their mom, Nathalie and Harper were in a car accident. After being in a coma for almost six months, Nathalie finally woke up, but with the mind of a teenager. She is in love with Bieber and gets excited over making cookies. Because of this child-like mind, she has to live in a care home. Thus leaving Harper with the responsibilty of her sister. The relationship between the sisters isn't the greates, which is to be expected in such a situation and age.

I loved Gemma's attraction to the water. It brings out my inner fish, now if I could only be a fish. She loved to go out to the bay and swim at night, on top of being on the school swim team. Now if she only knew her love for the sea would be her downfall.

The second I was introduced to Penn, Lexi and Thea, I smelled bad news. They are sirens, or what we call, mermaids. Told to be the Greek daughters of Achelous, god of the river, they are half human, half fish creatures. If you want more details, you'll have to read chapter 9. Their voices draw men from anywhere they can be heard.

I am personally not a fan of a crap load of information just thrown out at once. It can be a lot to process and i find myself rereading it multiple times. This I found the case in regards to chapter 9. Some people like this, others not so much.

On one of Gemma's nightly swims, she hears the sirens call her name. At this point I was like "Gurl, what you think you're doing." *SPOILER* Long story short, she drinks a voodoo potion that turns her into one of these sirens. Reason being, these girls were needing one more to complete their group of four, by the next full moon or else they'd die.  And as Gemma loved the water, they thought she'd be the best canidate.

There are many subplots that involve a hot guy or two that weave itself into the main storyline. Some people don't like this concept and get bored with the story easily because the'yre going "Soooo, this is important why...?"  With this being the first in a series, I try not to judge this. I find in the end subplots usually tie themselves together.

Overall, great start to a series. I am excited to read Lullaby. Amanda has created awesome, well rounded characters. And who knows, I may be falling for the song of the sirens myself.

Review: Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

Title: Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits #1)
Pages: 392
Release Date: July 31, 2012
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Review Copy: Own. Won in giveaway.

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.
(From Goodreads)

First off, I'd like to thank Justin's Book Blog for hosting the giveaway that I won this book from last year.

Let me start off by saying that this book made me cry more than any other contemporary book I've read. Ok, so maybe it was partly due to my hormones acting all crazy. But let's just say it wasn't.

Echo and Noah are two teens that are on their search for normal. Echo just want to understand what happened to that night that caused her to have the scars on her arm. All Noah wants is his family back. I think that everyone is trying to find what is "normal" nowadays, especially teens.  I just wanted to reach in and hug them or help guide them in the right direction.

Echo wants to bring memories to the surface to help her piece together the night of the accident. On top of it she has all these other factors in her life that makes "normal" seem far away.

Her "friends" (which I like to use loosely) want to her to be back with her ex, so they can be the power couple of the school. It isn't until they see Noah for he truly is do they back off. She never sees her mother because of the restraining order against her. Imagine not being able to talk to someone for answers, and not because they're dead, but you legally aren't allowed to. Adding to it, her brother was killed overseas while serving in Afghanistan. Something that Echo can't find peace over. It isn't until she starts a project that her brother started that she can finally have her peace. I know what it's like to not being able to say good-bye to someone. But that story is for another time. Then finally, to top it off, her father and stepmom are having a baby!

I give Echo major kudos for being able to just handle all this sh*t. I think if I had any of this stress, I would just throw my hands up in the air and give up.

Then there is Noah who lost his parents due to a fire. He also has 2 little, smart (Batman is where its at little man) and very adorable little brothers. All Noah wants is to have his brothers live with him. Not thinking about what it would do to his life or theirs. He just wants to be a family again, at all costs.

Katie did a bloody amazing job of the dual point of view, and I definately took some notes from it. Also, her ability to get into a guys head was perfect, she made Noah's thoughts sound natural but not cliched.

In the end, they both realize what they need and what is best for themselves and the ones around them. And they discover that in order to have "normal", all they need is each other.

"It's like I have this large black hole in my brain and it's sucking the life out of me. The answers are in there so I sit for hours and stare. No matter how hard and long I look, I only see darkness."

"I wrote about the person I love most, my older brother, Noah. We don't live together so I wrote what I imagine he does when we're not together."
"And what is that?" prodded the stout man.
"He's a superhero who saves people in danger, because he saved me and my brother from dying in a fire a couple of years ago. Noah is better than Batman." The crowd chuckled.
"I love you, too, lil'bro."

"We'd read about sirens in English this fall; Greek mythology bullshit about women so beautiful, their voices so enchanting, that men did anything for them. Turned out that mythology crap was real because every time I saw her, I lost my mind."

"I expect a report on his abs. Real details, not romance novel nonsense."

"Her eyes met mine again. "So what does this mean for us?"
I lowered my forehead to hers. "It means you're mine."

Hey there internet peoples!

I am Julia and I am one of Kristie’s besties!!!! I am tiny (under five feet!) and am frequently called Tiny Hulk as I am known to throw things (specifically my books and Kindle if they make me angry). P.S don’t worry I haven’t actually thrown my kindle...although I have been very tempted to.
